"Screen 1 & Screen 2" I remember whenever I was bored, my dad would pull out our old small TV and prop it right next to my bed. I would choose a Dr. Seuss VHS tape and insert it into the video slot and watch as the screen flashed the wonky characters. This was my daily routine until I turned 8 and the small TV was put into the closet, along with the all the tapes. Now in current days, watching the videos playing on the scrappy TV feels like I am going back in time, reliving each moment. This feeling can only be unlocked by different things whether an object, a smell, or a place, it can differ for each individual person, and that is fascinating to me. Kayla Jang (11th Grade) “The Beautiful World” Oh, how much I can remember how the world was. It was much more than breathing through a mask. I felt so much better while breathing fresh air. I do appreciate those days. The world is still beautiful. Naghelly Lopez (12th Grade) “birthday” This piece is about childhood innocence and joy. It's based off of an image of myself and my two childhood best friends at my fifth birthday party. The three children in the painting are wearing bright colors and have big smiles on their faces to represent joy. The background is gray because when you're a child, you don't pay attention to the background and are present in the moment. Justine a Charroux (10th Grade) "otter pops were never really that good" When confronted with the prompt ‘nostalgia’ I immediately thought of the summers that I would have as a kid and the sensation of being so free from the world and responsibility. Then I wondered for a minute why I so quickly thought of that. Now, when I look back at my childhood, the summers I spent, I tend to picture euphoria and constant excitement - even though that wasn’t exactly the reality. In my painting, I try to encapsulate the way that I often distort and romanticize childhood, or just my past, as some sort of beacon of happiness with which to aspire to. I walk around my life thinking I’ll never be as happy as I was when I was a kid, even though I wasn’t even that happy when I was a kid, I just didn’t think about it so much. But also, summer was nice. Maxine Lieb (10th Grade) “Here’s to never growing old” When good times were right and we could do whatever we wanted without anyone stopping us. Daphne Mendoza (12th Grade) "blur" In my work, I'm reflecting on the impermanence of time and how easily something or someone can disappear or be forgotten. However, memories are beautiful because they last forever. It is okay to reminisce on the past and allow it to peacefully fade when the time comes. Aidan Bae (11th Grade) “A Ride In Summer” One of the most nostalgic memories in my head, is that of a car ride back home after a day enjoying summer. The feeling of safety and contentment remain in this memory, and reminds me of simpler days. Peaceful, blissful, nostalgic nights in car full of dreams. Alejandra Ortiz (12th Grade) “Struggle of Youth” My painting is about a time we had to scrape up change around the house to be able to have a meal since we ran out of money and food stamps. I then realized my mom was a strong woman who would do anything for us (her children) so we wouldn’t have to suffer. Angel Fuentes (12th grade) “Christmas Wonder” I have always loved Christmas and the ambience of that time of year, but I think I truly enjoyed it more as a kid. It always felt like a magical time and I wanted to capture that emotion in my image. I have so many memories that I look back at and take for granted, but I am glad that I had a happy childhood. Melissa Cortez (11th Grade) “Family Dinner” A big portion of my childhood was eating with my family. My mom made amazing meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I sat in the kitchen watching her. This piece is an example of my family eating “pozole” - a traditional Mexican dish. Citlali Ibarra (11th grade) "Room of Interest" My piece is representative of several different phases and interests of mine throughout the years that have shaped me into the person I am today. Each interest is from a different set of years in my life. For example, American Girl Dolls were something I collected from the ages 6-10. My Harry Potter phase was in the 4th grade. My interest in wanting to pursue interior design was from ages 9-12; and although music is timeless the prime of my pop-punk/alternative days was middle school. The overall setting and base of the piece is an ode to the style of collages I used to create with my dad where we'd design our own homes using cutouts from HGTV magazines. Josephine Fischer (11th Grade) ¨flower boy¨ Everyone has gone through phases at one point or another that they can reminisce on. Personally, my phases have included fashion styles such as goth, scene, alternative, etc... In this painting, I tried to capture how I wanted to see myself during these phases, following the lack of personification due to the hair blocking the face and flower covering their mouth. I included this faltering in identification because I wanted this piece to be up for interpretation. Azulbella Ortega (10th Grade) “Two Sages, One Buckwheat, and One Coyote” This pot is returning to California in its native landscape - pre-colonialization. This vessel is supporting and celebrating California's native wildlife that used to thrive and live here harmoniously without competition. It is simply depicting my admiration for California's natural landscape. Tristan Hirsch (12th Grade) “Ode to the Vaqueros” I grew up watching a lot of Western films. I remember waking up early on Saturday mornings just to watch a film with my father. It's something that I loved doing with my father since it was kinda our thing and since my older sister and mother didn’t really like old Spaghetti Western films. Our all-time favorite was Sergio Leon's “For a Few Dollars More”. Genesis Ramos (12th Grade) "Delusions" Colors are nostalgic. For me at least. I remember I went through a small crisis when I was a kid because I cleaned my fish tank... with bleach! So, as you may guess little me had a breakdown when all of my fish died. Back then I felt like the world was vibrant and full of endless possibilities. But, not so much now. Maybe everything started falling apart after I became a fish murderer. Brenda Martinez (11th Grade) "Don't forget that life is supposed to be fun" This art piece is about looking back at childhood. As people grow older they tend to get more serious and caught up in stress, people forget that what we do is supposed to be fun, and enjoyable. It's just like when we played as little kids, the world was something we could create, we would play tag not worrying about falling, or imagine we were superheroes not caring about other people's thoughts. This memory was brought on by my little cousins who play around like there's no tomorrow, hopefully this is what I was able to embody in this piece. Esther Chaidez (12th Grade) "No Playdates" For the Nostalgia art show, I decided to focus on the child-like state of being nostalgic. In my work I have included child-like symbols that represent boundless imagination, such as toys, costumes, weapons etc. The location of the piece is a living room, a place grounded in reality but becomes a new place each time I imagined it as something else. Growing older, I have lost the ability to vividly be in my own imagined world, and I look back wishing I could return to that mindset. Shane Downey (11th Grade) “Sunrise” I drew this because it reminds me of the old times when the sun was rising. I was watching it on a mountain so I saw lots of skyscrapers and buildings. Max Sar (10th Grade) "We Forgot About the Gamecube" Spending time with my friends is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think "nostalgia". I decided to draw a snapshot of my friend Cormac and I hanging out in his room. It's not a callback to a special occasion, but a collection of different memories I have of him. Dempsey Bradshaw (12th Grade) "What I Miss the Most" These are some of my greatest memories from when I was a little kid. One was renting movies at Hollywood Video, the other is the popularity of the Wii - which I own. The one that means the most to me is spending time with my grandma, who sadly died three years ago. Jack Heavey (9th Grade) “Reminisce” There are many old frames packed in a corner in our apartment so looking through them made me reminisce about certain events in my life that made me happy. As soon as I came across this purple early 2000’s styled frame I had the urge to paint it and add new things to it like elementary school photos. I love to reminisce about my elementary school, since I had such a wonderful time there. It was a blast repainting this. Mia Du (10th grade) “La Panaderia” This piece of cake is a resemblance of childhood birthdays and the local cakes we would buy from the panaderia (bakery). Their cakes are very distinct and I'm sure many of us have bought a cake like this with the plastic balloons and red gel frosting. These types of cakes have probably made an appearance in many of our old photos, and an imprint in our memories. Desiree Buenrostro (11th grade) "El Chavo del Ocho" Some positive memories I have from my childhood are when I would be at my grandparents house and my grandfather, sister and I (and sometimes the rest of my family) would watch TV together, specifically reruns of the show El Chavo del Ocho. This show is very nostalgic to me because we would watch it very often; and it's a silly Mexican show. I almost felt connected to the show because it is from Mexico, and my family is Mexican. Also, I would learn Spanish from watching this comical sitcom. Just hearing the theme song is so nostalgic to me. Yolitztli Torres (10th Grade) “Party of the Clowns” I feel nostalgia towards the birthday parties I used to go to when I was little. Often these parties would have strangely specific themes like fairies or fish or even clowns. I was always a bit afraid of clowns though, so I thought it was a bit weird to see a bunch of children walking around with clown makeup on. Freya Meisterling (10th Grade) "Tea Time!" Wendy Mendez (11th grade) “My Time Riding In the Ring” The memory I have about my childhood is when my parents used to take me to a stables in Griffith Park. I would get on a horse and ride for a few minutes. I wished those few minutes would last forever. It’s one of my favorite memories because of my love of horses. Although I may no longer get on a horse at the stables, because of my age and height, I do wish to keep riding.
