“VAPA” I chose to paint this picture of me at school for Nostalgia because I have made a lot of great memories there. Samantha Placencia (12th Grade) “The Globe” This piece is a self-portrait that represents my typical day in quarantine, consisting of working in a dimly lit room without the chance to explore the world — local neighborhoods, other countries, museums, and everything else that the outside world has to offer. Sofia Liashcheva (12th grade) "Colorful Mind" The innocence of a child can be found in their imagination. Time is the thief of people's minds but our imagination will never be taken. I wanted to bring to life what happens when one's imagination takes over and we roam around the realm of the uncontrolled mind. In times of such despair and distress, it's important to focus on the good life offers. Although we cannot go back in time to moments we were stress-free, we can choose to feel those emotions. Pure euphoria. Christopher Gonzalez-Reyes (12th Grade) "5 de la Mañana" When I was younger I'd always love walking down to the little donut shop by my house with my mom. She would get her morning coffee and I'd get a chocolate glaze. The donut shop opens at 5 in the morning, and the night before, my mom would always tell me "Te quiero despierta a las 5 de la mañana." (I want you to be awake at 5 in the morning.) It's been years since we've last bought donuts there, but every time we drive past it, it brings back lots of memories. Anessa Medina (12th Grade) “Mossy Field” I vividly remember the afternoon trips my grandfather took me on. When I was little he would take me on bike rides to farms down the road. We loved looking at the pretty green landscape and the flower fields together. He would stop to let me pick flowers and let me look at cows. He would just stand with me, make jokes and talk. He never talked to me as if I was less than him. My Nostalgia art piece I want to capture what me and my grandfather shared every afternoon. Matthew Bolanos (10th Grade) "llangrannog" This is a painting of a beach in Wales - specifically llangrannog. This is a town I grew up going to every summer. I haven't been able to go the past couple years and so I’ve grown very nostalgic of the view. I added the person and the ship due to the fact you can always see people sailing on the horizon. Griffin Gotts-Alvarez (11th Grade) "Yafo" I can't recall the amount of times I have sat in my grandparents’ house, in the heart of Jaffa, Israel, reading the scribbled words painted across the large canvas hanging casually a top the arch way in the living room. This house is a reoccurring setting in my dreams, a home that I have visited every year since I was born, except for this year. This painting gives me that feeling every time I look to it, and my heart aches for that feeling to be real and tangible once again. Sasha Ivanir (10th grade) “Untitled” In the month before my freshman year at VAPA, I had the pleasure of visiting Cuba. Due to the travel restrictions on Americans my reason for visiting listed on my visa was “support for the Cuban people”. During my stay, I was completely disconnected from the rest of the world and everyone back home. I enjoyed and admired the culture and beauty of the country. This photo was among several that I took while on one of my many outings to the city of Old Havana. Roman Cuba Brown (11th Grade) "Untitled" My art is about some memories I had when I went to Guatemala for the first time to visit my family on my mom’s side. Another thing that made me happy as a child was roller skating – I took some heavy falls. I really liked to break the piñata at birthday parties and then always collect the most candy. I put a Lily in the corner of the piece because Lily was the name of my first pet cat. There is also a car with a little girl in it, to represent the long road trips my family would take - passing a bus full of kids making faces in the window. And there is a really big Happy Meal with balloons and flowers with a slide coming out of it. This shows how much I really liked happy meals and how fun I felt whenever I got them and went to play. Marilis Moralis (10th Grade) “Untitled” Before coronavirus and quarantine, every few years my family would go meet with my cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents on the beach. We're a pretty large family and the best parts were trying to squeeze us all under one roof, and being around so many people I love. We would go to a house that looked like this, and spend time just enjoying each other's company for a week or so a year. Simone Kane (11th Grade) "Memoria Inolvidable" What my piece is about is a childhood memory I enjoy so much; the only memory I bring with me all the time. It is about my mom and dad bringing me to the beach for the first time; I was so fascinated with how the water would rise up and splash! My parents were having a great time; I could see it in their faces. I would get excited and scared when the waves hit! I would hold on to my dad while he was enjoying the scenery. This is the only clear memory I have with my parents when I was younger and the only child. I’ll forever remember it. Bethany Marcos (10th Grade) “Untitled” This piece depicts a distant memory of the road trips I went on with my family and friends. Visiting Solvang felt like visiting another country and it seemed magical. When I revisit this memory, I get reminded of the bright buildings, what seemed like a huge windmill, and riding four-seater bikes around the town. Caitlyn Lee (10th Grade) "Swim" Growing up in an apartment complex, I found myself spending lots of time by the pool. Being alone in the deep end represented true independence at a young age. I was fully free, and my imagination was boundless. Whenever I go swimming alone, there is definitely a feeling of nostalgia. Shane Downey (11th Grade) "Far" During quarantine, I started getting back into this game called Minecraft. This game has been very special to me since 2012, and playing it now has made me remember all the fun times I had. Sometimes I would come home from school, load up my world, and begin creating a house or going out on adventures into the unknown. In this piece, I wanted to recreate a landscape/adventure I had from the game into my own painting style. Emely Reyes (12th Grade) “Color Overload” This is about how colorful the world looked when I was little. Kai Chang (12th Grade) "Fairy Land" I chose to do this sort of fairy land because when I was younger I loved fairies and forest mythical creatures so much. I still have so many books about how to find fairies and the different types and this reminds me of that book. This land was the place I wanted to live in when I was little, sometimes I still do! This photo makes me feel super happy and nostalgic because it takes me back to my childhood. Camille Roth (11th Grade) "LA SUCKS" The skyline in this piece is downtown Los Angeles. Despite having been born and raised in L.A., the best days of my life happened in New York City. In New York City, the party never stops and you’re always on the run. I long to be laying in the streets of Manhattan again. I feel as though Los Angeles has become a boring repetitive city where everyone is constantly fighting to be the most popular and comparing wealth. In New York, it didn't matter who I was or how expensive my clothes were, I was welcomed with open arms and a slap in the face. Sascha Gallegos (12th Grade) "Conciertos" I decided to paint about a concert that I went to last year. I was supposed to go to more concerts this year, but 2020 took a sharp turn. In difficult times like this, I deeply miss them. They are the one place where I can forget about all my worries and just live life to its fullest in the moment. I get a special kind of happiness that no other thing can offer. In my painting, you will see me holding a light stick that was used during the concert I attended in May 2019. Yoselin Camargo (12th Grade) “summer” This is atop the hill that I live on and I always come up here. With the city behind it this spoke to me in artistic way. Drusilla Church (11th grade) “Walk by” A memory of walking by, with peace, the bridge to VAPA’s main office - while running late. Cars below me, sky above, and the view in between. I cherished the feeling of the sun over my head while listening to music. Never realized I’d miss those moments. William Huinac (11th Grade) “Dreaming of San Miguel” My Nostalgia art piece brings me back to important things from my childhood and how I grew up. It’s of a girl, representing me, in a dream. The dream represents the stories my dad would tell me about his childhood. Mia Martinez (10th grade) “SKZ” One of my best memories is going to a K-Pop concert, specifically for a group called Stray Kids. I was able to get free tickets, buy merchandise, and hang out with my friends before the concert started. Seeing my favorite artists performing live and being noticed by them is a very happy memory that I hold very dearly. Kayrielle Enrique (10th Grade) “Bring back my Youth” This image is important to me because it reminds me of when I was a kid, my family would go to the park and we would spend time there. We would go to this one park, every once in a while, and stay there until dawn. The park was beautiful and had lots of trees and a bridge with a little river flowing down it. Now looking back, it was one of the most memorable things imprinted in my mind. I decided to draw eight kids, who are now grown up, looking at the past when they were small and carefree. Gabby Chavez (11th Grade) "Can We Get This Please?" The swap meet was a perk growing up in a Hispanic family. This place was always more than just a cheap mall for me. It was a place that my family and I felt a part of, a place where I explored, a place that seemed like a second home. In my piece, I display the swap meet I often visited with my siblings. Although the swap meet is a nostalgic place for me, I wanted to embrace two people who impacted my view in nostalgia. During my early childhood, I lost my grandfather, and in August this year, I lost my other grandfather. The Eagle on the right symbolizes my beloved Mexican grandfather. On the left, the Quetzal represents my dear Guatemalan grandfather. Ashley Ramos (11th Grade) "Your Brain is a Vessel" This piece is meant to illustrate the fact that your brain is a vessel for your information and memories. I feel it is nostalgic because it displays a physical representation of my past memories, particularly adventures or time spent with family (things that are limited now due to the current state of the world).
