“Ventura Morning” This is from photo that I took of my brother while I was staying in Ventura. My goal in this piece was to capture the movement of my brothers arms and the flow of his body. I hoped to capture a moment in time rather than make a staged and stiff piece. By being very intentional with my brush strokes I was able to capture the organic movements of my brother without being too precious about the piece and overpainting every little detail. Roman Cuba Brown (Grade 11) "Untitled" My nostalgia art piece has a very deep connection with me as the artist. It gave me the opportunity to embrace my inner child - since I drew myself when I was a toddler. Growth and change are a very common thing, and it is constantly happening as we are evolving. Sometimes looking back on things can be hard; and other times it can be a sweet reminder of the light in life…Maebellene Burge (10th Grade) "Untitled" This art piece yells a lot about my family and different things we have done together. The image is me, and the many things around me, that we have done together that make me who I am. Mikalah Player (10th Grade) “Remembering” This is my brother. He was a year younger in this painting. We used to be around each other a lot, so I took pictures of him for Shipley’s class last year. He was getting tired me taking them so he looked at me weird. Now that we aren’t at school, he goes to his grandma’s house. I don’t see him as much. Ma’Laysia Martin (12th Grade) "Cuahtemoc Emperor of Mexico" Cuauhtémoc was the Aztec ruler of Tenochtitlan from 1520 to 1521, making him the last Aztec Emperor. The name Cuauhtemōc means "one who has descended like an eagle", and is commonly rendered in English as "Descending Eagle", as in the moment when an eagle folds its wings and plummets down to strike its prey. Dulce Genchi (9th Grade) “My Grandmother” My Grandmother was who took care of me when I was younger, Me my Dad and Grandma lived together in an upstairs apartment in Paris for many years. I used to like looking out the window at all the grey roof tops as the rain came, it was a very cozy place. I miss her a lot lately so I thought that using her in my project about nostalgia made sense. I looked through my things and found items from that time and laid it on an old picture, then I took a picture of those items on the old picture to give it color and make it new. Ruby Mehling (11th Grade) "Portrait Of My Great Grandmother" This is a portrait of my great grandmother. She passed before I was born but I've always been inspired by her because she was unapologetically herself. I've always wished I could have met her! Grace Jones (12th grade) “Cricket in the Pool” Recently, I´ve been really upset dealing with my great grandma who was diagnosed with cancer, and because I´ve been in a rut creatively and just in general. After receiving the news about my great grandma, I had a dream where my mom gave me a pet cricket and I loved that cricket. I did so many things with that cricket; but in the end, the cricket drowned in a pool. I was heartbroken, and although I cried, I woke up peaceful. I dedicated the piece to my great grandma who I think represented the cricket in my dream. Roselyn Frausto (10th grade) “A Shade of Jade” I don't get to see my best friend every day like I used to. We go to different schools now, too. She's been one of the most stable aspects of my life - eleven years in total. I wanted to capture her in this portrait as something simple but unerasable, as ink is. Keira Kevany 11th grade "Descendant of Yarn" My grandmother knitted many things for me when I was young. I have chosen one string of yarn to create a nostalgic line connecting my past, present, and future. The intertwined faces blend together to represent not only memories of myself, but that of my family and ancestors. Edith Katcher (11th Grade) "Broken Reality" This piece is based on the person WBO I wanted to be as a child, trying to be a better version of myself. The cracked mirror is inspired of how looking in a mirror, when your ugly breaks in. But changed into not being yourself and knowing that it isn't real. Yustielmi Larios (12 Grade) “Yearning Youth” Upon speaking to a young family member, I was introduced to a child’s perspective during these uncertain times, a perspective that longs for visits from their grandparents, the sight of tourists on walks alongside the canal, the sight of sidewalk card games. Francisco Russo (11th Grade) This piece is trying to convey how I am nostalgic for human contact because of this long quarantine. I decided to paint this because of the desire for human contact such as hugging and holding hands that I’m sure is missed by everyone.
