Norah Johnson
“Undecided”

Art statement:

I decided to paint a series of Spam after being recommended to do so by McManus. I was first inspired to use oil paint after my bag of apples still life. I really enjoyed the freedom that the texture of the paint affords me.

The self-portrait I created is so far the most faithful portrait I have of myself because in my artwork there is always some pessimistic tone, some darkness, negative commentary or subversion. Nothing is ever completely alright. After a while, the redundancy of each brushstroke in my Spam paintings lead me to feel apathetic.  Buy what is shown to you and accept without question. Destroy old buildings, place colors on top of colors until there is nothing distinctive. Do what you are told, enter an art show, apply to college and keep going and going...
