Art statement:
The focus of my art is on the “self”. The different beliefs, emotions, and experiences that shape an individual are what I aimed to capture through a series of self-portraits. The goal of my portfolio was to explore how varied and complex a person can be through different self-portraits. While some photos in my portfolio are simple and non-digitally altered others are complicated and heavily edited to contrast the simple photos. The main goal of my sustained investigation was capturing the design principle of emphasis either through centered compositions of contrast in order to highlight self.
Throughout my investigation, the question of self is represented through the very different tones and emotions evoked in each image. I practiced with repetition in several pieces to explore the idea of feeling out of place and played with multiple color schemes in a single photo to represent the many experiences that contribute to finding self.
